Solenoid Loom

The Solenoid Loom is a master's thesis that answers the question: How can weaving logic be applied outside the field of textiles?

As an answer, the thesis proposes an electromechanical tile patterning tool, the Solenoid Loom. By functioning according to the same principles as punch-card looms, the machine automates the patterning process of handmade tiles. Using the Solenoid Loom falls between craft and industrial production, intertwining desired features from the manufacturing fields represented by punch card weaving and handmade tile production.

The Solenoid Loom reads black and white pattern cards hand-drawn by the machine operator. As the operator pulls the Solenoid Loom over the pattern card and a clay tile, it transfers the pattern as an 8x8 pixel grid imprinted by an array of solenoid actuators.

Using the Solenoid Loom reduces the control of the craftsperson, but in return, it offers a distinctive style, repeatability, and efficiency in the manufacturing process. The result of the thesis is a fully functional proof-of-concept that offers a new production method for patterning tiles.
